Personal Disability Insurance

While most people are careful to insure their health, homes, cars and other assets, many forget to protect their greatest asset – the ability to earn an income. According to the Disability Management Sourcebook the next hour will see 194 people injured in car accidents, 57 homes catch fire, 230 people will die, and 1,027 will become disabled.  Disability is the cause for 48% of mortgage foreclosures. Only 2% due to the death of the breadwinner.[1]

What are the real odds of suffering a disability? Almost 3 in 10 workers entering the work force today will be become disabled before retiring[2]. One out of every seven workers will suffer a five-year or longer period of disability before age 65[3].  (“)   According to the 2007 Field Guide to Financial Planning by Donald Cady, 43% of all 40-year olds will suffer a disability for at least 90 days prior to age 65.

Many Americans assume that if they are disabled, Social Security or Workers’ Compensation will adequately protect their families.  The reality is that over 90% of disability accidents and illnesses are not work related[4]. While Social Security may be available to some, less than half – 39% - of the 2.1 million workers who applied for Social Security Disability benefits were approved in 2005[5]. Even more alarmingly, those who are approved are currently receiving an average of only $978/month in Social Security Disability benefits[6].
